my heart is standing on the pitcher's mound

This is the picture I had in my head as I watched my son's first baseball game this season. His coach's wife was at the game with their two year old. This picture of Greg was taken when his father was coaching the modified team at the school he now plays for. Of course coach's wife had to jump up repeatedly to play catch with her little guy in addition to answering all kinds of inquiries. One of which was...."is derek out there?" Her answer: "No, derek only plays on TV". Realizing he had just wondered if derek jeter might be on the field, I chuckled at how very much into baseball he is. Reminded me of earlier times with Greg. I wanted to warn this mom that she should relish that she gets to be his catcher....for now. Does she realize how quickly the time will come that she will be incredibly scared to catch his fast ball?

Just wait until she sees how trying some of the little league days can be...............
That there will come a time that she'll miss the days when she had to go ON the field with him.....and unbelievably her son might get to an age where he doesn't even want to her to yell words of encouragment.... but he still wants her THERE!?

What happened to this cute little guy?????

He became this handsome, confident young man...
whom the coach thinks was taught to pitch very well by his father and grandfather. More importantly, the coach told us today that our son is the kind of kid that coaches want to coach......

A co-worker and I have a running joke when I complain about the trials of raising a teenage boy......he let's me get just so far and then says "you had him". Ahhh, the perspective of a child-less-by-choice person....but yes, I had him. And today was one of the thousands of proud moments I will have being his mom.
Making the decision to have a child is momentous.
It is to decide forever to have your heart
go walking around outside your body.”

OK - co-workers are concerned with the tears streaming down my face. I can't help it. My emotional side first came out uncontrolled the day Greg was born! I have been a mess ever since. It does seem like only yesterday he was that little 2 year old baby that could hit a wiffle ball clear over the house. Now look at him - I am speachless these days when I see how grown up, handsome, mature and OLD he is getting. I am so proud of him. (and you - he is a lot like you) I hope I will be able to get to more of his games.....I will bring the tissues.

So far this season he already has a sense of what it takes to be a Tomahawk. I wish I could be at the JV games but he'll be Varsity soonplaying a huge part. This year has been almost a dream. I stop and give thanks often. Allison.......know what I mean????

Kids achieving and finding what it is they are good at is one of my favorite things. I know how proud I am of kids that I merely teach, I can imagine how you much feel as a parent. Aren't good kids awesome?

I have a grandson, Trevor, age 13 (14 in June) and baseball is his passion. always has been. When he steps on that pitcher's mound, my daughter says "oh no, I'm nauseous" -- it must be a common thread -- that, and when he dons his catcher's gear and steps behind home plate -- my heart catches all the way up in my throat. and to recall when Trevor threw a wiffle ball over our 1/3 acre fenced yard, and it sailed into the neighbor's avocado orchard -- it FLEW out of his tiny hands -- SUCH memories. your play list going in the background - AWESOME. I found you because I, too, am doing Brene's read along -
sorry - long winded - just had to say that I totally GET your love-of-son-and-sport blogpost. wow.
